In this weekly half-hour program, Chicago Sun Times outdoor columnist Dale Bowman shares his passion for the natural world. His fishing, hunting and hiking adventures will take you to the rivers, woods and prairies of Illinois. During the first year of the show, Dale co-hosted with naturalist Joel Greenberg. On his third visit to the show, Phil Willink is in a new role as senior research biologist for the Shedd Aquarium and he talks about doing a comprehensive evaluation of Illinois' threatened and endangered fish species. From that we naturally talk about the status of Chicago waterways and rivers. At the end, we touch on bighead and silver carp. I find his opinions sharp and interesting on Asian carp.

Nathan Grider talks about his study on alligator gar reintroduction in southern Illinois. The University of Illinois-Springfield grad student also talks about gar in general. Alligator gar officially disappeared from Illinois less than 20 years ago. Good to see the possibility of a comeback, and with some side benefits at Spunky Bottoms off the Illinois River. Spunky Bottoms is one of my favorite place names in Illinois.

Bill "Garman" Meyer talks gar and fishing for them in Illinois. We also get into the hows and whys of the rather hilariously brilliant http://www.garfishing.com site (G.A.S.S.) for the Gar Anglers' Sporting Society. There was much we did not touch and will get to another day down the road, when we GASS up again.

Joel Greenberg talks about his just-released "A Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon's Flight to Extinction". Joel is a familiar voice to Outside listeners. He co-hosted the show for the first year. For the last several years, he has been intensely involved in finishing "A Feathered River" and it shows. The book is receiving international notice and acclaim. It is doing for the unique and disturbing story of passenger pigeons on an international scale what...

Solomon David starts by talking about migratory fish and record ice on Lake Michigan, but we touch many other topics. The Shedd Aquarium's postdoctoral research associate and fish ecologist is back for his second visit. The starting point was the record ice on Lake Michigan and fish migrations, but we touched on some of the loves of his, including some ancient fishes, such as gar and bowfin. The photo below is from a field excursion last spring to check on young northern pike on a Green Bay...

Olaf Nelson talks about being the first to catch an alligator gar in Illinois since 1966 and other topics related to his conversion to a focus on native fishes. The story of catching the first alligator gar since 1966 in Illinois is a worthy enough tale, but equally important is Nelson's interest in helping people, especially fishermen, understand native fishes. His specialty is suckers, with a focus on redhorses, as shown by his web site, moxostoma.com. You could say he wears his love of...
